DETOX YOUR SKIN AS WELL AS YOUR BODY THIS NEW YEAR

New Year is the time of year when most of us embark on a detox after over indulging in too much food and alcohol. However we spend a lot of time thinking about what we put IN our body but it’s also important to consider what we put ON our body. Our biggest organ is the skin and it absorbs nutrients and chemicals – both the good and the bad ones. Claire Gray – founder of natural skincare company Ermana – gives her tips for detoxing your skin in the New Year.

Think about all the products that you use as part of your daily skincare routine and if you wouldn’t put it in your mouth then you shouldn’t feed it to your skin.

1. Always read the ingredients

Try to find the most natural products you can with as few toxic ingredients as possible. Avoid brands with the following: Paraben, Phthalates, propylene glycol and sodium lauryl sulfate. They are most likely to be listed as something like methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben. These are all types of parabens and can be harmful.

2. Do you really need that “anti-cellulite” cream?

There are many natural remedies that can be used as alternative to skincare filled with chemicals. For example, a great way of getting rid of cellulite is by using a dry brush or massaging natural oils into stubborn areas. This will stimulate circulation and help to tone the skin.

3. Replace your brands

Once you are ready to replace a new moisturiser or body lotion then look for a natural alternative. Experimenting with new brands is fun and you might just find a new product that you will love.

4. You are what you eat!

Don’t forget to eat well for your skin’s health too

  • Kiwis are a great source of vitamin C, which helps protect your skin from sun damage.
  • Avocado is full of vitamins A, E and B and biotin. Avocados help your skin stay hydrated. They are a good source of zinc, which cleanses and detoxifies your body.
  • Greens like spinach, kale, romaine, Swiss chard and collards are also great sources of essential vitamins and minerals. They contain vitamin C and E, which are antioxidants and help protect the skin from aging and sun damage. Their deep colour comes from “carotenoids,” which have been shown to enhance our natural glow.
  • Tomatoes are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that helps prevent free radicals and oxidative damage to your skin.
  • Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids. These create strong skin cells that are more resistant to sun damage and better at keeping out environmental toxins.
  • Raw chocolate contains flavanols, which improve the skin's appearance and skin texture and increases blood flow. It’s also high in zinc, which prevents, acne, aging and skin damage such as wrinkles.

5. Drink More (non-alcoholic options)

  • Green Tea & Rooibos Tea: Green tea is an excellent source of polyphenols, which are potent antioxidants. Rooibos tea is also high in antioxidants, but has no caffeine which can be dehydrating.
  • Water improves skin complexion. It moisturises the skin and keeps it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth. It also helps reduce wrinkles. It’s the best anti-aging treatment around!

Once you eliminate synthetics and toxic ingredients from your skincare regime, your skin will naturally improve and your skin will become healthier.
